Trauma, Anxiety, and Pornography: Understanding Patterns, Values, and Healing with Trey Stubbs
How can therapy help people understand trauma, anxiety, pornography use, and the values shaping their choices?
In this first episode of the podcast, licensed professional counselor Josh Korac speaks with therapist Trey Stubbs about trauma, anxiety, pornography, counseling values, and what helps people create meaningful change.
Trey explains that trauma is not defined only by what happened. People can experience similar events and respond very differently depending on their history, support system, nervous system, beliefs, and sense of safety. Josh and Trey discuss the difference between experiencing a traumatic event and developing post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as why validation should not require assuming that every painful experience leads to the same outcome.
The conversation also explores anxiety and the ways fear, avoidance, and attempts to control uncertainty can narrow a person’s life. Therapy can help people recognize the thoughts, behaviors, and relationship patterns that maintain anxiety while building greater tolerance for discomfort and uncertainty.
Josh and Trey discuss pornography use from a non-shaming, clinically thoughtful perspective. They consider how pornography may become connected to loneliness, stress relief, emotional avoidance, secrecy, relationship dissatisfaction, sexual expectations, or conflict with personal and religious values. Rather than reducing the issue to willpower or morality alone, they explore the importance of understanding what function the behavior serves and how it affects the individual and their relationships.
They also examine the role of values in counseling. Therapists bring their own beliefs and experiences into the room, but ethical counseling should center the client’s goals, autonomy, and values. Josh and Trey discuss how therapists can remain genuine while avoiding pressure, judgment, or imposing a predetermined definition of a good life.
